What is Face Threading?

Face threading is an ancient facial hair removal method that has been practiced by women in Asia and Middle East for thousands of years.

This ancient practice is typically not taught to the beauticians, but it is a family skill that is passing down from generations to generations.

Recent years, facial threading has become the trendiest way of facial hair removal because of its various benefits and now it is very widely available in Asian beauty salon worldwide.

The last we have checked, some non Asian salons are having face threading services too!

How does it work?

Traditional face threading is typically done by an experienced professional who works with nothing but just 1 long piece of thread (sometimes with the entire roll of cotton threads).

One end of the thread could be in held in their mouth (this is the traditional way and more flexible) or tied around their neck (more hygienic but less flexible), you can call this the pivot.

The other end of the thread or the entire roll of threads will be held in their hands. There should be about 40cm to 70 cm of the thread that is hanging freely between the pivot and the hand.

Then the professional will use the other free hand to create a loop by twisting the thread a few times so that it will be in an X formation. The thread is moved back and forth in a controlled motion while held against the skin.

Face threading is achieved by having the hair “twisted” out by the twisted threads.

Cost of traditional face threading

Face Threading in Singapore typically cost between S$20  (full face in the neighborhood shops)  to about S$50 in town (Orchard road).

A full face threading includes threading the full face and sometimes includes the neck at your request.

Eyebrows typically are not included in the cost and it will cost an additional S$3 to S$15 dollars depending on where you getting them done.

Please make sure to check the rates with the professional before engaging his/her services.

Is traditional face threading painful?

Compared to waxing/sugaring or tweezing, threading is a far much more gentle to get rid of your facial hair.

It does not take a layer of skin off like waxing.

It is also the most natural and 100% safe way to remove your facial hair without using any harsh chemicals that is harmful for pregnant, breast-feeding women and women with sensitive skin.

Are there any side effects?

The side-effects of traditional facial hair threading are:

  • Skin can be over stretched. The skin need to be to be taut before it can be threaded. Otherwise, the twisted threads may “twist” a tiny layer of your skin. Pulling or stretching your facial skin, however, is not a good idea because it will create wrinkles in the long term! You might want to know that there is no need to stretch your skin when using Epicare™. To read more about Epicare™ benefits, click here.
  • Threading may cause outbreaks. There are a few factors to examine when it comes to understanding why outbreaks may happen with traditional face threading.
    • Is your face clean?
Try to visualize what actually happens during threading. Hair are being pulled by the roots or removed at its follicles.
This leaves the pores open and free to trap germs and bacteria. Therefore, always wash your face thoroughly before threading.
    • Apply white power on the face before threading?
In Asia, sometimes the threading professional will apply a very thin layer of white talcum powder on your face before threading. This is to absorb the oil on your face and make the facial hair more obvious for threading. After knowing that your pores will be opened during threading, would it be a good idea at all to apply the white power? We do not think so!
    • Did you get to wash your face before you get your face threaded in the salon? Are the threads used by the threading professional clean?
Or do you ever remember seeing the threading professional using the same roll of thread for multiple customers one after another?Does your threading professional have sweaty palms or does she wear gloves?  When you are threading your face in a salon, do you ever remember that the professional will ask you to wash your face first?

We hope you know where we are going with all these questions.
